How do I choose the right therapy for me?
If you’ve ever thought about trying a complementary therapy but just don’t know quite where to begin, this is for you.
Perhaps a friend has told you how much Reflexology has supported her wellbeing. Perhaps your doctor has suggested that hypnotherapy might help you stop smoking, or you’ve simply reached a point where you want to take a more active role in supporting your own health and wellbeing.
Whatever has brought you here, complementary therapies can offer another way to support your wellbeing alongside conventional healthcare.
But how do you find the approach that’s genuinely right for you?
I have learned that choosing a complementary therapy is a very personal decision. Taking time to consider the right therapy for your individual needs can help you feel confident and comfortable in the choice you make.
These seven questions will help you think about what matters to you and which approach might be the best fit.
How to choose the right complementary therapy for you:
1. What do I actually want help with?
It sounds obvious, but it’s an important place to start.
Before you look at any therapy, take a moment to get clear about what you would like to achieve. Are you looking for support during a period of persistent stress or poor sleep? Perhaps you are experiencing aches and pains, or simply feeling tired and overwhelmed.
Maybe you are recovering from a particularly demanding period in your life and would like some dedicated time to rest, reset and focus on yourself. Or perhaps you already feel well and simply want to make your wellbeing more of a priority.
Your answer can help guide what comes next.
Someone seeking deep relaxation may be drawn to Reflexology; someone wanting to explore and change long-standing habits or beliefs might consider RTT® Hypnotherapy; while someone looking for a deeply relaxing, hands-off experience may be drawn to Reiki.
There is no single ‘best’ therapy – what matters is finding an approach that feels right for you and your individual wellbeing goals.
If you’re exploring support for a particular concern, please do get in touch and we can discuss the therapy, or combination of therapies, that may best suit your needs.
2. What kind of experience suits me as a person?
Complementary therapies can differ enormously in how they work with you, and your own preferences matter.
Broadly speaking:
Hands-on therapies – such as Reflexology, may suit people who enjoy touch and physical treatments.
Talking and mind-based approaches – such as RTT® Hypnotherapy, may appeal if you would like to explore thoughts, habits, beliefs and emotional patterns.
Energy-based approaches – such as Reiki, offer a gentle, hands-off or light-touch experience focused on relaxation and overall wellbeing.
Honouring your own preferences isn’t self-indulgent. Feeling comfortable with the approach you choose can help you relax, engage with the experience and make your wellbeing something you genuinely look forward to prioritising.
3. How will this fit alongside my conventional medical care?
This question matters enormously
Complementary therapy is exactly that: complementary. It is intended to work alongside conventional healthcare, not to replace it.
If you have a diagnosed medical condition, are taking prescribed medication, are pregnant or are awaiting medical investigations, please let me know and continue to follow the advice of your healthcare professionals.
Before treatment, I will take an appropriate health and wellbeing history and consider this within the boundaries of the therapies I practise. Where necessary, I may recommend that you speak to your GP or another healthcare professional before proceeding.
I will never advise you to stop or change prescribed medication or medical treatment.
4. Is the Practitioner properly qualified, insured and registered?
This is an important question when choosing any complementary therapy Practitioner.
Don’t be afraid to ask me about my qualifications or insurance and the professional bodies I belong to.
You can find further information about my training, qualifications and professional background on the About page of the Grounded Grace Collective website.
5. Do I feel comfortable with this person?
The relationship we build matters.
It is important that you feel at ease, listened to and respected throughout your wellbeing journey. You should feel comfortable asking questions, discussing any concerns and saying if something doesn’t feel right for you.
Every client is an individual and everyone’s needs are different. I want your experience at Grounded Grace Collective to feel personal to you, so please let me know if there is anything I can do to make you feel more comfortable or improve your experience.
6. What does the evidence say – and is the Practitioner honest about it?
The evidence available for complementary therapies varies considerably depending on the therapy and the area of wellbeing being considered.
You certainly don’t need to become a scientist to make an informed choice, but it is reasonable to ask questions about a therapy you are considering, including what it may – and may not – be able to offer.
I am always happy to answer questions about the therapies I provide and to be open about their scope and limitations.
I will never promise miracles or guaranteed cures. I believe you deserve honest, balanced and grounded information so that you can make the choice that feels right for you.
7. What are the practicalities – and can I commit to them?
Finally, think about the practical side.
How much time can you realistically give yourself? What does each session cost? Would a course or package of treatments work better for you? Perhaps you would prefer the flexibility of an online appointment rather than attending in person.
At Grounded Grace Collective, Reflexology treatments are offered in person, while Reiki and RTT® Hypnotherapy can be offered in person or online, depending on your needs and preferences.
Some people enjoy an occasional treatment when they feel they need it, while others prefer a regular programme of sessions as part of their ongoing wellbeing routine.
Choosing an arrangement that you can genuinely sustain – financially, practically and within your diary – can make it much easier to prioritise your wellbeing without it becoming another source of pressure.
Ready to choose your therapy?
Once you’ve worked through these seven questions, hopefully you’ll have a much clearer idea of what you’re looking for – and feel more confident about choosing the approach that feels right for you.
And remember, you don’t have to work it all out on your own.
If you’re still unsure whether Reflexology, Reiki, RTT® Hypnotherapy or a more bespoke combination of therapies would best suit you, please give me a call or drop me an email.
We can have a chat about what you’re looking for, answer any questions you may have and explore which approach might feel right for you.
I look forward to welcoming you.
