Looking After Your Immune System

Your body is doing extraordinary things every single day to keep you healthy.

One of its greatest achievements is your immune system - a remarkable network that works continuously to protect you from bacteria, viruses and other harmful organisms. It quietly monitors your body, responding to potential threats and helping you recover from illness.

We often take it for granted.

But just as your immune system works hard to look after you, it also benefits from being looked after in return.

What can affect your immune system?

Many different factors influence how well our immune system functions.

Poor sleep, chronic stress, limited physical activity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and a diet lacking in essential nutrients can all affect our overall health and wellbeing.

Sometimes these influences don't make us ill immediately, but they may leave us feeling more tired than usual, lacking energy or taking longer to recover when we do become unwell.

The encouraging news is that many of these factors are within our control.

Four simple ways to support your immune system

Nourish your body

Rather than looking for a miracle supplement, focus on eating a balanced and varied diet rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, healthy fats and good sources of protein.

Limiting highly processed foods and excessive sugar, whilst enjoying caffeine and alcohol in moderation if appropriate for you, can all support your overall health.

As with so much in wellbeing, consistency is far more important than perfection.

Prioritise your sleep

Sleep is one of the most important ways we support our immune system.

During sleep, our bodies repair, restore and regulate many essential functions. Research continues to demonstrate the close relationship between good-quality sleep and immune health.

If sleep is something you struggle with, it may be worth exploring gentle bedtime routines, relaxation techniques or resources such as Professor Matthew Walker's talks and books on sleep.

Care for your emotional wellbeing

Long-term stress can affect both our physical and emotional health.

Although we can't always remove the sources of stress, we can often find ways to respond differently.

Talking to someone you trust, spending time outdoors, practising mindfulness, making time for hobbies or enjoying regular complementary therapies can all help support relaxation and emotional wellbeing.

And if you're finding life particularly difficult, please don't hesitate to seek support from your GP or an appropriately qualified mental health professional.

Keep moving

Regular movement benefits almost every system in the body - including the immune system.

The NHS recommends adults aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, but this doesn't have to mean joining a gym.

Brisk walking, gardening, dancing in the kitchen, energetic housework or choosing the stairs over the lift all count.

The best form of exercise is often the one you genuinely enjoy and will continue to do.

There is no magic solution

It's understandable to want a quick fix, particularly during cold and flu season.

The reality is that there isn't a single supplement, treatment or therapy that can prevent illness altogether.

Instead, supporting your immune system comes from looking after your health as a whole—through nourishing food, restorative sleep, regular movement, managing stress and taking time to care for yourself.

At Grounded Grace Collective, I believe wellbeing is built through the small choices we make every day. Whilst Reflexology, Reiki Energy Healing and RTT® Hypnotherapy do not boost or strengthen the immune system, many people find these therapies help them relax, manage stress more effectively and support their overall sense of wellbeing as part of a healthy lifestyle.

After all, when we care for ourselves consistently, we're creating the best possible environment for our bodies to do what they are designed to do.
